Chapter 1
Patch Notes
The clip is fourteen seconds long. You know because you've watched it more times than you'll ever admit.
Riley Lundqvist, Ironveil's twenty-two-year-old prodigy at the time, leans into her stream mic after the semifinal with her headset around her neck and her silver-blonde ponytail coming loose. She's flushed from winning. She's grinning like she owns the building.
"Copperhead's captain," she says, "calls rounds like he's reading the patch notes out loud. Bless him. Somebody get that man a hobby."
Chat explodes. Somebody makes it a sound bite. By morning, half the Breachline Pro League has a new name for you.
Eight months later, Ika still has it as his ringtone.
"Turn it off," you say.
"I forgot it was on there, I swear." Ika fumbles his phone under the kitchen table while it chirps patch notes out loud one more time. Vash, across from him, slowly lowers his coffee mug and stares at him until Ika puts the phone face down and slides it away like it's radioactive.
The Copperhead house smells like burnt toast and energy drinks, which is to say it smells like January. Six gaming PCs hum in the practice room where a dining room should be. The whiteboard still has last season's Saltworks setups on it, half erased. Somebody's socks are on the foosball table.
Tad Tamblyn stands at the head of the table in cowboy boots and a Copperhead polo that's a size too optimistic. Next to him, in a cream suit that costs more than the house's furniture, is Ezinne Fashola from Paragon Peripherals. Your sponsor. The reason the lights are on.
"Boys," Tad says, then catches Coach Ynez's look. "Team. Let's not dance around it."
"Please don't dance," Ynez says, reading glasses on a chain, arms folded by the fridge.
Ezinne smiles the way people smile before they cut a budget. "Paragon loves Copperhead. Paragon also loves numbers. Last season you finished sixth of ten and your stream views dropped forty percent. The board wants a story."
"We're a story," Solomon says. He's slouched beside you, all long legs and freckles and a hoodie with a hole at the cuff. Your best friend since you were nineteen and sleeping on the same LAN floor in Lubbock. "We're the underdog story. People love underdogs."
"People love winners," Ezinne says kindly. "And they love drama. Paragon will renew for two years on one condition."
Tad clears his throat. Rubs his neck. You know that move. It's the move he made right before he told you the team bus was being repossessed.
"We've signed Riley Lundqvist," he says.
The kitchen goes silent. Even the fridge seems to stop humming.
You hear yourself laugh. It's not a good laugh. "That's funny."
"It's not a joke, son."
"She's on Ironveil."
"She left Ironveil in November," Ezinne says. "No explanation. Crownfall made her an offer, so did Galewind. She's a free agent. Or she was, until about nine o'clock last night."
"She called our captain a reading disability on stream," Vash says mildly. "That is not drama. That is crime."
"It was patch notes," Ika mutters. Vash kicks him.
You're aware of every eye at the table turning toward you. The captain. The in-game leader. Anvil. The guy who's supposed to have the plan.
"We have five players," you say slowly. "Me, Vash, Ika, Mako on loan, and Sol. Who's she replacing? Mako?"
Ynez doesn't look away from you. That's how you know.
Solomon goes very still beside you.
"Sol moves to substitute," Ynez says. "Full salary. He stays in the house, he stays on the team. Lundqvist plays entry. And she plays it next to you."
"Next to me," you repeat.
"Next to you, Ethan."
"Duo spearhead. Every play runs through the two of you. Paragon's new weekly stream series is built around it." Ezinne turns her tablet. A slick graphic glows on the screen: your face on one side, Riley's on the other, a crack of lightning between them. One word across the top.
RESPAWN.
"Rivals forced to carry each other," Ezinne says. "The internet is going to lose its mind."
"So am I," you say.
"Wonderful," Ezinne says. "Lose it on camera, Ethan. Paragon pays for that."
Solomon pushes his chair back. It scrapes, loud. He doesn't say anything. He just walks out the back door into the gray yard, past the sad grill, and keeps going until the gate bangs.
You find him twenty minutes later sitting on the curb two houses down.
"You should've fought harder," he says without looking at you.
"I didn't know, Sol."
"You're the captain, Ethan." He laughs, and it's worse than yours was. "She called you Patch Notes in front of a hundred thousand people, and they gave her my chair. Next to you."
You don't have an answer. You sit with him anyway until the cold gets into your jeans.
At 2 a.m. the house is quiet except for Vash snoring through two walls.
You log into Breachline. The menu music is the same synth swell it's been for three years. Your friends list is mostly gray.
One name glows green.
nobody_7 is online.
You've never heard their voice. You don't know their age, their city, their name. Fourteen months ago you queued solo at three in the morning after a bad scrim, got matched with a random top-ranked player who never turned their mic on, and won a round you had no business winning because they typed i got your left and then actually got your left. You sent a friend request. They accepted. Every night since, almost without fail, at 2 a.m., you queue together.
Nobody is your best teammate. You've never told anyone that, because it sounds insane.
The duo invite pops before you can send one. You accept.
nobody_7: rough day cap
You don't ask how they know. They always know.
Anvil: management signed the girl who called me patch notes. she's taking my best friend's spot. she's moving in. she's my duo now.
The cursor blinks for a long time.
nobody_7: that's a lot
Anvil: i'm going to have to hand her every round. smile for the sponsor. pretend it doesn't make me want to throw my monitor out a window
nobody_7: maybe she's not what you think
You stare at that.
Anvil: you've seen the clip
nobody_7: everyone's seen the clip
nobody_7: queue up. i got your left
You play four games. You win all four. Nobody plays like they're angry at someone, and it isn't you. At 4:10 a.m. they type go sleep cap and log off, and you lie in the dark listening to the house tick and settle.
The doorbell rings at nine.
You stumble down in sweatpants and a T-shirt you slept in, because Vash is in the shower and Ika sleeps like the dead and Solomon is not, you suspect, going to open that door for anyone today.
You pull it open.
Riley Lundqvist is on your porch with a duffel bag over one shoulder and a hard keyboard case in her hand. Backward black cap, silver-blonde ponytail pulled through the back, an oversized gray hoodie that should look sloppy and somehow looks like a magazine cover. A row of tiny silver hoops climbs one ear. There's a small beauty mark under her left eye. Her eyes are gray-green, the color of a lake right before a storm, and they're taking you in from your bed hair down to your bare feet like she's reading a map she already memorized.
Up close, on no sleep, she is so beautiful it's genuinely annoying.
Behind you, Vash has appeared on the stairs in a towel. He makes a noise like a kettle.
Riley's crooked grin arrives slow.
"Morning, Patch Notes," she says. "Which room's mine?"
Your love interest is about to text you.
